Website project brief

Client: [Company] · Contact: [Name, role] · Date: [Date]

1. The business

  • What does your business do, in one sentence?
  • Who are your customers, and what do they usually need from you?
  • Who are your main competitors?

2. Goals

  • Why do you need a new website now?
  • What should a visitor do on the site: call, buy, book or enquire?
  • How will we know the project worked, six months after launch?

Note: Push for a measurable answer. "Look modern" is a wish. "Double the enquiries from the contact form" is a goal.

3. Pages and features

  • Which pages do you need?
  • Anything beyond pages: booking, a shop, member logins, more than one language, forms?
  • Which tools must the site connect to: CRM, email marketing, payments?

4. Content

  • Who writes the text?
  • Do you have photos and video, or do we need to source them?
  • Is there brand guidance: logo files, colours, fonts?

5. Look and feel

  • Three websites you like, and what you like about each
  • Anything you definitely don't want?

6. Technical

  • Do you own the domain? Who has the login?
  • Where is the current site hosted, if there is one?
  • Is there an existing site we're replacing, and what must move across: pages, blog posts, search rankings?

Note: Ask for logins at the start. Waiting for domain access is the most common reason a launch slips.

7. Timeline and budget

  • Is there a fixed launch date, and what's driving it?
  • What budget range have you set aside?

Note: If the client won't share a budget, offer a range: "Projects like this usually land between X and Y. Where do you sit?"

8. People

  • Who gives feedback, and who has the final say?
  • Who will update the site after launch?
